Maulana Sayyid Abul A‘la Maudoodi of Pakistan (d. 1979) was one of the most famous Sunni Muslim religious and political leaders of the 20th century. He was author of numerous books and articles on various issues in Islam, as well as being head of the Jama‘at-i Islami, one of the major religious political parties in Pakistan.

As his followers have been in the forefront of anti-Ahmadiyya campaigns, to brand Ahmadis as being outside the fold of Islam, it is interesting to read Maulana Maudoodi’s own early views on this subject and on the more general issue of declaring Muslims as kafir. If those views are followed, it becomes almost impossible to declare at least the Lahore Ahmadiyya Movement as being outside Islam.
